PRODUCTION

  • We believe in minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery;

  • We monitor and try to reduce the use of our resources (water, electricity, herbicides and pesticides, glass, cardboards etc..), re-use if possible, as well as the installation of solar energy and other renewable energies;

  • As a result, vineyards do not appear as manicured but have a healthy environment and micro-climate;

  • To ensure excellent quality grapes, AZAMOR has a maximum production of 5 tons per hectare. We keep our sulpher counts low during the fermentation process ensuring a low total sulpher level in the bottle;

  • We encourage indigenous (wild) fermentation from the grapes picked at our estate to produce our own yeast culture to re-apply to further fermentations.

AZAMOR
Selected Vines 2018

THE WINE

AZAMOR Selected Vines 2018 is a specially crafted blend of grapes from the premium parcels of the Azamor Vineyard. Each selected parcel is fermented separately and aged in French and American barrels. The final blend is created just prior to bottling.

TASTING NOTES
AZAMOR Selected Vines 2018 is a selection of our premium grapes from the Azamor vineyards. A smooth rounded blend full of fruity aromas with dense fruit and plummy flavours giving way to a soft velvety tannin finish. Selected Vines 2018 can be drunk immediately or laid down in your own cellar.

HARVEST
The 2018 Vintage started on the 31st of August and finished on the 29th of September.
We pruned for "dry" vineyard to ensure optimum quality and quantity of grapes because of our limited
water resources The growing season was mild and rainfall normal. Everything was going famously. Then,
between the 3-6th August, we had exceptionally high temperatures of 45-48ºC. Any exposed fruit was burnt and because the vines stalled photosynthesis, maturations over the vineyard were inconsistent.
In terms of quality the vintage was surprisingly good.

VINIFICATION
Fermentation — All grape varieties were fermented in separate stainless steel 10-ton tanks for up to 10 days from between 22ºc to 24ºC. It was left on skins before being pressed and before going through malolactic fermentation.

Aging — Azamor Selected Vines 2018 was aged for 12 months in our cellars, in 15% French and 15% American Oak Barrels, and the remainder in stainless steel tanks. Blending took place in November 2021 and the blended wine was bottled in December 2021. Released in March 2022.

AZAMOR Petit Verdot
2021 Lagar

THE WINE

This new launch Petit Verdot 2021 is the first release of our long-awaited Petit Verdot Lagar 2021. It started because my son Sebastian brought some friends to the winery in 2021 to foot tread our grapes, there was quite a party and lunch was at 5pm!

Having started this process, this wine was one of our best wines of the 2021 vintage, so we decided to bottle it as a single wine. The Petit Verdot in the Azamor vineyard has an exceptional grape with a complexity and elegance second to none. It is hand selected and picked to ensure maximum fruit maturity and balance. The grapes we foot tread are added to the lagar in small boxes. When the grapes are at the desired quantity, we foot tread the grapes in our “lagar” and they are slowly crushed and the juice pours out. Regular daily foot treading for 4 days allows the fermentation to be well underway, before the wine is transferred into a stainless-steel tank, to finish fermentation.

TASTING NOTES
AZAMOR Petit Verdot Lagar 2021 is wine made with 100% Petit Verdot fruit. Seamless. A vibrant colour, delicate fruit aroma, incredibly succulent, full of soft fresh fruit flavours and a smooth persistent finish. Delicious!

HARVEST
2021 had a wonderful and consistent rainfall during the growing season, between January and April and
almost none until November. There was sufficient water available to water until the harvest took place
in August. The summer temperatures were between 34-38C and the quality of grapes excellent.
Harvest started on the 23rd of August and finished on the 14th September. It was an excellent vintage for
Azamor.

VINIFICATION
Fermentation — The Petit Verdot grapes were fermented in lagars of 5 tonnes for 4 days, the fermentation starting slowly at around 21ºc and gradually increasing to 24ºC. The wine was pressed and finished the
fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine was put in barrels.
